Hockey: Worcester club round-up

THE season looks to have ended for Worcester firsts with a 2-1 home defeat to Sutton Coldfield in Midland Men’s League Division One.

England Hockey have since suspended all club matches due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Worcester started well at RGS The Grange on Saturday but could not convert a two-on-one opportunity.

The visitors hit back to bag a well-worked opener but Worcester battled without making the most of some half-chances.

Sutton still pressed high in the second half and scored again after an infringement from a home player in the circle.

Worcester fought on and created opportunities to get a goal back through Matt Gardner with five minutes to go.

But an equaliser evaded the team who are left third from bottom in the table.

The women’s firsts drew 2-2 at University of Birmingham fourths in Midlands Feeder West after conceding an early goal.

Worcester did not panic and began to read the pitch better.

The ball was played through to Tash Walker who calmly beat the keeper.

In an end-to-end clash Birmingham got a second goal to lead.

However, another through-ball found Saska Ingham who beat a defender and calmly fired over the keeper into the net.

In the second period a lot of the play was in the centre of the pitch with Worcester creating more chances. Late on Worcester came close to stealing the win with a ball from defence finding Walker high up the pitch.

She committed the defender before slipping it through to Emma Gardner but the keeper ensured the draw with a smart save.

Worcester men’s seconds beat Solihull Blossomfield 2-1 with goals from Rob Goodman and Jeremy Drake.

In a rearranged Sunday game they then beat Olton and West Warwick 3-1 thanks to Chris Wood, Sam Glass and Will Wicket.

Worcester thirds lost 10-0 to Harborne.

Although losing 5-0 to table-topping Stourport, Worcester fourths then beat Bromsgrove 3-1 on Sunday.

Malcolm Evans, Simon Griffiths and Luke Pillinger were on target.

Worcester fifths also had two games, beating Barford 3-2 through Paul Sharratt, Gerry Ogle and Andy Griffin.

On Sunday they lost to Edgbaston 7-2 despite a brace from Tom Howard.

Worcester sixths lost 2-0 to Droitwich Spa and the sevenths fell 3-0 to Bromsgrove.

The women’s seconds went down 3-2 to Harborne with Clare Hayes and Jo Baggs scoring.

Worcester thirds drew 1-1 with Bournville as Bryony Miller netted.

The fourths’ game was cancelled as the opposition could not raise a team.
